Course Description
This course empowers EMS leaders to transition their agencies from reactive, punitive Quality Assurance (QA) models to dynamic, continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) systems. Participants will explore practical methodologies—including the IHI Model for Improvement, the PDSA cycle, and Lean Six Sigma—to systematically eliminate operational waste, reduce clinical defects, and optimize the complete patient journey. By adopting evidence-based national performance measures and fostering a culture that prioritizes system redesign over individual blame, leaders will learn to sustainably engineer higher-quality emergency care.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Implement Continuous Improvement Methodologies: Apply the IHI Model for Improvement and the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle to execute strategic, small-scale tests of change that drive clinical and operational standardization.
-
Optimize Systems with Lean Six Sigma: Utilize Lean Six Sigma principles and the DMAIC roadmap to identify the eight types of organizational waste, reduce clinical defects, and redesign flawed systems rather than punishing individual providers.
-
Leverage National Performance Data: Evaluate and integrate National EMS Quality Alliance (NEMSQA) performance measures to move beyond arbitrary operational clocks, using accurate clinical data to map the patient journey and justify strategic resources.
