Course Description
This course explores foundational leadership styles—including autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire, transformational, and servant—and their strategic application within high-consequence EMS environments. Participants will move beyond a single default approach, developing the intentionality and self-awareness required to adapt their style to varying situations, from tactical high-acuity crises to long-term cultural development. Ultimately, learners will examine how to overcome cognitive biases to effectively serve their crews and will begin drafting their own comprehensive EMS leadership philosophy.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
-
Evaluate and Adapt Leadership Styles: Differentiate between major leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire, and transformational) and determine the most effective situational application for each based on team competency and operational urgency.
-
Overcome Cognitive Biases: Identify common mental traps—such as confirmation and availability bias—and apply fact-based servant leadership principles to address root organizational causes rather than assumptions.
-
Formulate a Leadership Identity: Synthesize the strengths and risks of various leadership approaches to draft a personal EMS leadership philosophy that establishes clear ethical boundaries, builds trust, and drives high-performance patient care.
